Table After Care
Table After Care
Environment –
Extreme room temperature and humidity changes can cause havoc to natural wood
products as it causes the fibres to shrink or well which can lead to cracking
and distortion. Please make sure you situate your table in a sensible location
away from the extremities and direct sunlight.
Cleaning – Use
a soft, clean cloth such as a microfibre cloth to clean your table, excessive
use of cleaning products may cause discoloration to the natural wood tones. It
is recommended to clean your table with non-alkaline cleaning products and to
dry immediately as to not leave liquids sitting on the surface for long periods
of time.
Surface Protection
– Avoid setting hot pans, dishes or cups/mugs directly on the surface as they
can leave rings or burns on the surface which are very hard to get rid of
without resurfacing the table. It is recommended to keep your table out of
direct sunlight as UV rays cause discoloration to wood (this is why exterior
wood greys and requires constant protection). Table runners, mats and coasters
will help to prolong the life of your table.
Metals and Tannins
– Please note that wood is susceptible to corrosion from ferrous metals and
iron in particular. Some species such as Oak and Chestnut are very prone to it.
This is where the ferrous metal reacts with the tannins in the wood and can
cause staining which is typically blue or black. Please be careful placing
ferrous metals on your table for long periods of time especially if they are
wet!
Repair – Preventing damage is the best remedy for your table. Wipe up spills and as soon as they occur. If you do require surface repair, it is recommended to seek advice from a professional before continuing.

Oils
Oils are the easiest
of maintenance, just make sure your table is clean with soap and water and
leave to dry. After the table has dried you can now apply your oil thoroughly
to the surface of the table with a lint-free rag. After 20 minutes buff any
excess residue from the surface and leave overnight to dry before placing any
items on the surface. Please note you will require to use the same product for
application.
Varnishes
Rubio Monocoat offer
an aftercare kit for their Monocoat 2 Plus C called “RUBIO MONOCOAT EASY CARE
KIT” which is brilliant for varnished woods. Please contact us for more
information or if you are unable to locate it.
Lacquers
Lacquers and epoxies
will require a light sand and professional administration to reapply, it is not
recommended to try this yourself. However, lacquers and epoxies are a very
durable and long-lasting finish which does not require the same levels of
maintenance as other products.
